DeBra’s Insights
Amoena Bra Fitting Guide
Finding the perfect fitting bra is essential for comfort and confidence, especially for women who have undergone breast surgery. Amoena bras are designed with these unique needs in mind, offering a range of styles and sizes to ensure the best fit. This guide will walk you through finding the right Amoena bra, including measuring tips, fitting advice, and product recommendations.
Amoena Bra Styles
During a mastectomy bra fitting at DeBra's, you will be paired with a specialised Mastectomy Fitting Consultant who will discuss your unique needs and gain insights into your lifestyle and goals for the consultation. Amoena offers a variety of bra styles to cater to different needs and preferences. Here are some popular Amoena bra types:
Mastectomy Bras: These bras have inside pockets to hold breast forms securely in place. They provide support and comfort for women who have undergone mastectomy surgery. If you don't already have a breast form, don't worry; your Mastectomy Fitting Consultant will discuss this with you and help you choose what's right for you.
Post-Surgery Bras: Amoena post-surgery bras are suitable not only for mastectomy patients but also for those who have undergone breast reduction, breast enhancement, or breast reconstruction surgeries. These bras are crafted from soft, comfortable materials and, in most cases, are suitable for immediate wear after surgery. Many styles include front closures for added convenience.
Compression Bras: Often recommended for use during the recovery period following various breast surgeries. They offer varied compression levels to help minimise swelling and support healing.
Leisure Bras: Soft and easy to wear, leisure bras are ideal for lounging at home or sleeping.
DeBra's recommends discussing your options with your medical practitioner before your fitting appointment to ensure you choose the best style for your needs.
How to Measure for a Mastectomy Bra?
Proper measurement is crucial for finding a well-fitting mastectomy bra. A correctly fitted bra enhances comfort, boosts confidence, and supports overall well-being after breast surgery.
Band Size (Underbust): Measure around your chest, just under the remaining breast where the bra band sits. Ensure the tape is snug but not tight.
Cup Size (Overbust): Measure from the middle of your chest (sternum) to the centre of your spine, over the fullest part of your remaining breast. Double this figure to get your overbust measurement.
Working with a professional fitter experienced in mastectomy bra fittings is recommended to ensure accurate measurements.
Choosing the Right Breast Form
Selecting a suitable breast form is essential for comfort and confidence. Here are a few things to consider before your Prosthesis or Mastectomy Bra Fitting Appointment but don't worry, these are all things your Mastectomy Fitting Consultant will discuss with you during your appointment.
Cup Fullness: Determine if your remaining breast is shallow, average, or full.
Shape: Choose the shape that best matches your preference, such as Symmetrical, Extra, or Universal.
Wearing & Caring for your Amoena Breast Forms
The Amoena Breast Forms can be worn with pocketed bras for secure placement. Some forms, like the Amoena Contact Light 2S Prosthesis, are self-adhesive but are still recommended to be worn with a bra for added security.

A Guide To Mastectomy Swimwear
After your breast surgery, you may not have the same relationship with swimming as you previously did. Some women get back in the big blue as fast as possible, with no worries, while others need the added confidence of secure breast forms in specially-designed mastectomy swimwear. Here are some things to consider when you’re looking to get some sun and sea or hit the pool.
Understanding Mastectomy Swimwear
Mastectomy swimwear is purpose-designed for women who’ve had breast surgery. You probably have some scarring if you’ve had a part of your breast removed (lumpectomy) or a single or double mastectomy. Post-surgery, you may opt to emulate breast shape with a breast prosthesis. Made from either silicone or a bead-filled pouch, you can use these to customise your swimmer by putting your breast form(s) into the pockets of a mastectomy suit. Everyone is different; you may feel more confident with a symmetrical shape or choose to swim as you are. Our swimsuits are designed for optional breast forms and come in various styles that look chic and feel fabulous on all body types.
Choosing Mastectomy Swimwear
For anyone who’s undergone breast surgery, the recovery process is both physical and psychological. Suddenly, swimming is more complicated than before, and that’s why post-surgery swimwear exists – to give you options. Swimming is a fantastic experience, and everyone should have the choice to dive in. Our mastectomy swimwear has pockets to keep your prosthetics in place and adjustable straps that let you balance your prosthetics and keep them symmetrical.
DeBra’s mastectomy swimwear is snug-fitting, allowing your inserts to stay put so you can be confident in the water. The high arm openings, wide straps, and high neckline help hide potential scarring, while tummy control features flatten the belly. Whether you choose silicone or other forms, remember that foam inserts can absorb some water when swimming.
DeBra’s Recommendations for Mastectomy Swimwear
Sea Level Eco Essentials High Neck Mastectomy Swimsuit is DeBra’s favourite. Take the plunge into the season with the Sea Level design that enhances your body with ultimate support, comfort, shape and timeless elegance. Features a stretch ladder trim, removable soft cups, powermesh support at the front and back to ensure maximum support.
Amoena is one of our go-to brands for post surgery bras and swimwear. Amoena Swimwear includes one piece and two piece styles, as well as clear prostheses. Our fitters recommend the Amoena Aqua Wave Balance Swim Prosthesis, which is not only water resistant but also quick-drying.

Wearing A Bra to Bed: Yay or Nay
Deciding whether to wear a bra to bed is a topic of much debate. Some swear by the comfort and support it provides, while others argue it's unnecessary and possibly harmful. In this article, we will explore the pros and cons of wearing a bra to bed, examine if it's wrong to sleep with a bra and share DeBra's recommendations for those who choose to sleep with a bra. Whether you're looking to prevent breast pain or find a comfortable-fitting bra for nighttime, this guide will help you make an informed decision.
Pros & Cons of Wearing a Bra to Bed
Pros
Support for Large BreastsWomen with large breasts often seek additional support at night. Wearing a bra to bed can help reduce breast pain by preventing excessive movement during sleep.
Preventing Skin IrritationA well-fitted bra can prevent skin irritation and chafing caused by the friction of breast tissue against the skin.
ComfortSome women find it more comfortable wearing a bra during the night, and a breathable bra can help keep moisture at bay.
Cons
Potential for Skin IrritationOn the flip side, wearing the wrong bra at night can cause skin irritation, especially if it's too tight or has an underwire.
Possible Restriction of Lymphatic SystemSome experts argue that wearing a bra, particularly a tight one, can restrict the lymphatic system, potentially impacting breast health.
Comfort IssuesFor many, bras can be uncomfortable, leading to disturbed sleep and discomfort.
Is It Bad to Sleep with a Bra On?
There is no definitive answer to whether wearing a bra to bed is bad for you. The key lies in the type of bra you wear and your comfort. Here are some considerations when deciding.
No Direct Link to Breast CancerThere's no scientific evidence linking wearing a bra to bed with an increased risk of breast cancer.
Breast HealthWearing a bra at night doesn't necessarily impact breast health negatively. However, ensuring you wear a well-fitting bra is crucial to avoid adverse effects.
Fact-Checking Myths
Prevents SaggingIt's a common myth that wearing a bra to bed prevents sagging. Sagging is influenced more by genetics, age, and gravity than by wearing a bra throughout the night.
Side EffectsWhile some women might experience side effects like discomfort or skin irritation, they can often be mitigated by choosing the right bra.
Conclusion
The decision to wear a bra to bed is personal, influenced by individual comfort and needs. While there are pros and cons, choosing what feels best for you is crucial.

Best Bras for Seamless Look Under Clo...
The right bra can make all the difference when achieving a seamless look under your clothes. Whether wearing a fitted t-shirt, a delicate blouse, or a sleek dress, the last thing you want is visible bra lines disrupting your silhouette. In this article, we will explore the best bras for a seamless look under clothes, answer key questions and provide expert recommendations to help you find the perfect bra.
What Types of Bras Don't Show Under Clothes?
Finding an invisible bra under your clothes requires attention to several key factors. Let's look at a few different bra options.
Smooth Cup Bras
Bras with smooth, seamless cups are designed to lay flat against the skin, ensuring no lines or textures are visible through your clothes. They are often referred to as 'shirt bras' or 't-shirt bras' because of their effectiveness in providing a smooth appearance under fitted garments.
Full Cup Bras
Also known as full-coverage bras, they provide a smooth, contoured look that minimises any potential for bulges or visible lines. With a natural shape and ample support, full cup bras are ideal for achieving the seamless look we all strive to achieve.
Wire-Free Options
For those seeking ultimate comfort without sacrificing a seamless look, a wirefree bra could also be an excellent choice. Wirefree bras nowadays provide support through their design and materials.
Ensuring that your bra is true to size is crucial for achieving a seamless look. An ill-fitting bra can create unwanted bulges and lines. Knowing your correct bra size and choosing a bra that fits perfectly is essential. If in doubt, DeBra's team are happy to assist in-store, through virtual fittings, or if you have a question, you can contact them on Live Chat.
Is A White Colour Bra the Best to Wear Under a White Top?
Many people believe that wearing a white bra under a white top is the best way to keep it from showing through, but surprisingly, a red bra is less noticeable. This counterintuitive phenomenon occurs because red bras, particularly those in deeper shades like crimson or burgundy, blend better with the skin's undertones, minimising their visibility through the fabric. The stark contrast of a white bra against the skin can create a more pronounced outline, whereas a red bra tends to disappear subtly. This trick has become a favourite amongst those in the know, offering a seamless and confident look under white tops.
Are T-Shirt Bras Good for Everyday Use?
Yes, T-shirt bras are an excellent choice for everyday use. Here's why:
Versatility: T-shirt bras are versatile and suitable for many outfits beyond just T-shirts. Their smooth cups and seamless design make them ideal for wearing under blouses, dresses, and sweaters, providing a polished look without visible lines.
Comfort: Designed with comfort in mind, t-shirt bras typically feature soft, breathable fabrics and well-constructed bands and straps. This makes them comfortable for all-day wear, whether at work, running errands, or enjoying a night out.
Support: Despite their minimalist appearance, t-shirt bras offer great support. Many styles include full coverage, adjustable straps, and supportive bands that ensure a secure fit, helping you feel confident and comfortable throughout the day.

DeBra's offers a diverse range of smooth and full-cup bras to meet your unique needs. We consulted with DeBra's fitting consultants to determine which bras they highly recommend in the fitting rooms, and which best suit their 'customers' seamless look requests.

What To Do When You Are In Between Br...
Finding the perfect bra can be daunting, especially when you are in between bra sizes. At DeBra's, they understand women's challenges in finding a bra that offers comfort and support. Believe it or not, it is possible. This article will provide general information to help you navigate this tricky territory, including determining your correct bra size and choosing the right bra when you are between cup sizes. Let's dive in and find you the perfect bra fit!
Tips For When You Are In Between Bra Sizes
Understand Your Bra Measurements
First and foremost, ensure that your measurements are accurate. Measure your band size and bust size correctly. Sometimes, slight variations in how you measure can affect the size you end up with. You may find DeBra's Bra Fitting Guide helpful.
Try Sister Sizes
Sister sizes are an excellent solution for those who feel their band is a little too firm or loose. If your current size doesn’t fit perfectly, try its sister size. For example, if you’re a 12G, but the band feels too firm, you might find a better fit in the 14FF or if you’re band is feeling slightly too loose, you may find a better fit in the 10GG. The band and cup volume will be proportionate, giving you a comfortable alternative.
Look for Bras with Adjustable Features
Bras with adjustable straps and multiple hook-and-eye closures can provide a customised fit, accommodating slight size fluctuations. Adjustable features allow you to tighten or loosen the bra as needed, providing a better fit between sizes.
Opt for Stretch Fabric
Bras made with stretch fabric are more forgiving and can accommodate variations in cup size. They provide a snug fit without causing discomfort, making them ideal for those who experience size changes throughout the month.
Consider Padded or Moulded Bras
Padded or moulded bras can help fill out the cup if you are shy of filling a full cup size. They offer a smooth silhouette and additional lift, making your bust appear fuller and better fitted in the bra.
Explore Different Bra Styles
Different bra styles can fit differently, even if they are the same size. For example, balconette bras have a different fit than plunge bras, or the brand Panache differs from the Elomi brand. Trying various styles can help you find one that accommodates your unique shape and size variations.
Check the Bra's Construction
Bras with side support, wider straps, and a firm band can offer better support and a more comfortable fit for in-between sizes. These elements help distribute breast tissue evenly and prevent spillage or gaps.
Conclusion
Finding the perfect bra doesn't have to be a struggle. DeBra's offers a wide range of bras that cater to all sizes and shapes. Whether looking for everyday comfort or special occasion wear, their collection has something for everyone. Here are some of the collections you can explore.
Full Cup Bras is all about functionality.
Balconette Bras for when you want a fuller bust without overspill
Plunge Bras are all about the cleavage. Low, sexy neckline without the worry of spilling out of the cups.
Sports Bras protect tissue against bouncing and rigorous movement during sporting activities.

How To Choose the Right Sports Bra
Choosing the right sports bra is crucial for ensuring comfort, support, and optimal performance during your workouts. With so many sports bra designs available, it can be challenging to find the perfect one. This guide will help you navigate the process and select the ideal sports bra.
Biggest Mistakes When Choosing a Sports Bra
Choosing the wrong sports bra can lead to discomfort and inadequate support. Here are the most common mistakes women make when choosing a sports bra:
Not Getting Fitted
One of the biggest mistakes is the sports bra not fitting correctly. Knowing your band and cup size is essential for finding a snug sports bra with proper support. DeBra's offers a free in-store and virtual fitting service if you are unsure of your size. Feel free to reach out, and they love to help.
Ignoring Impact Levels
Different activities require different levels of support. You will need a high-impact sports bra to minimise breast movement and bounce for high-impact activities like running. A medium or low-impact sports bra might be sufficient for yoga or walking.
Choosing Style Over Function
While selecting a sports bra based on appearance is tempting, design and functionality should be your top priority. Sports bras that offer encapsulation or compression are better for support.
Overlooking Strap Adjustability
Straps are crucial in a sports bra fit. Make sure the straps are adjustable and sit comfortably on your shoulders without digging in.
Do You Need a High Impact Sports Bra for Running?
Running is a high-impact activity that can cause significant breast movement. A high-impact sports bra is designed to provide maximum support and reduce movement, preventing discomfort and potential damage to the breast tissue. Look for features like wide, adjustable straps, a snug band, and an encapsulation design, which offers individual support to each breast. The Panache Endurance Non-Padded Wired Sports Bra is an excellent example of a High Impact Sports Bra and comes highly recommended by DeBra's Fitting Consultants.
Is It Better for A Sports Bra to Be Tight or Loose?
A proper fit ensures that the sports bra provides adequate support and reduces breast movement during exercise. Here are a few tips.
Snug but Not Too Tight: Your sports bra should fit snugly but not so tight that it restricts movement and or breathing. You should be able to fit two fingers between the straps and your shoulders.
Band Size: The band should fit snugly around your rib cage. If it rides up, it's a sign of it being too loose, and you need to go down in size.
Cup Sizing: Ensure the cups encapsulate your breasts without causing spillage or gaps.

Your everyday bra should be your go-to when looking for something super comfy. Comfortable doesn't automatically mean beige and boring, but it must be comfy. No rule that says your everyday bra can't also be sensational. Because you tend to wear these everyday items for longer or more often, they form the foundation of your look. Sports Bra Fitting Guide
Ensuring you have the right sports bra is essential when working out. One of the most critical pieces of equipment is a good sports bra to help keep your breasts supported and prevent them from bouncing around as you work out. In this blog, DeBra's explains the importance of selecting the correct sports bra for you and the different sports bras available depending on your workout intensity to minimise pain and discomfort.
The Importance Of Wearing A Sports Bra While Working Out
Women have been breaking barriers in sports for years, but there is one area where they still lag: proper bust support. Women are more likely to experience pain because of improper support during their workouts, and wearing a correctly fitted sports bra can help to mitigate this problem.
As more women embrace fitness, we must promote the importance of wearing a correctly fitted sports bra. We can break down barriers and achieve our fitness goals with the proper support.
How To Choose The Right Sports Bra
Sports Bras have come a long way with modern technology and fabrication in the last ten years. Today there are so many types and styles of sports bras on the market, making it harder to know which one is right for you. DeBra's specialise in perfectly fitting tens of thousands of women of all shapes and sizes each year! With us you are in good hands.
The first step is to identify your needs so read on for DeBra's tips and tricks for finding the perfect sports bra.
DeBra's Sports Bra Fitting Guide
The Different Sports Bras Available
Not all workouts are equal. Make sure you mix up your bras when you mix up your routine. Wearing the wrong type of bra can have severe implications on breast tissue health, comfort, and performance. There are four levels of impact that sports bras can support.
Low Impact Sports Bras
Low impact sports bras are perfect for activities with little to no bouncing. These sports bras are ideal for:
Walking
Chilling
Stretching
Yoga
Pilates
Weight Training
Golf
Medium Impact Sports Bras
Medium Impact sports bras are designed for activities with moderate bounce and are best for:
Jogging
Riding
Power Walking
Dancing
Skiing
Hiking
High Impact Sports Bras
High Impact sports bras are for stability where there is a high level of bouncing in the activity. If this is you, we recommend you invest in a high-impact sports bra if you like to do the following:
Running
Mountain Biking
Netball
Hockey
Horse Riding
Extreme Impact Sports Bras
Extreme Impact sports bras are the next level up and are recommended for women who take part in the following sports:
Martial Arts
Combat Sports
Aerobics
Gymnastics
Climbing
Choosing The Appropriate Shape
Choosing the correct shape for your sports bra can minimise movement for adequate support. If support is your number one priority, you will want to look for a sports bra with a J-hook. The J-hook function allows the wearer to convert the straps from over-the-shoulder to racerback. During medium to high-intensity workouts, the racerback style will decrease pressure on the shoulders, minimise bounce, and provide maximum lift.
Encapsulation is best suited for low-impact activities, and these bras:
Have individual cups
Have no compression
Provide a natural shape
Are better for larger busts
Compression/Encapsulation sports bras combine compression and encapsulation techniques to give high-impact athletes shape and support.
Our Fitters' Favourite Sports Bras
We all have favourite rights. Here are DeBra's Fitting Consultants 2024 top 5 sports bras.

Bras vs Bralettes
When it comes to lingerie and bras, the styles and fashion options are endless. Despite being stocked in every significant lingerie retailer forever, bralettes and soft cup bras have recently burst into the limelight, bringing a wealth of body positivity and new fashion. But does that mean we should ditch the traditional underwired bra in favour of this fashion-forward - and comfier - alternative? Or is it more complicated than that?
The Perfect Situation For Bras & Bralettes
Bras protect your chest and back from excess strain and help smooth out your figure. They are essential in every woman's wardrobe and have been around for over 100 years in their modern form. A correctly fitted bra should carry 80% of the weight of the chest, and the shoulders should bear the remainder.
The benefits of a well-fitted bra include the following:
Show off cleavage
Enhance the figure
Prevent pain by providing support
Comforting
What is a bralette?
A bralette is a type of bra that emphasises comfort and style without the use of underwires. Perfect for relaxed lounging or casual wear, bralettes provide gentle support and come in various designs, including lace, seamless, and soft cup options. They are particularly suitable for women with smaller busts who may not need extensive support, but they can also be found in styles that cater to fuller busts. Our bralettes are carefully curated to ensure quality, durability, and comfort, making them an ideal choice for everyday wear or special occasions.
A simple yet sexy bralette offers comfort that regular bras can't match. For years, we have been told bras are perfect for pushing up and accentuating your breasts to feel secure and supported. Nowadays, we have an alternate option with bralette styling. Bralettes are sexy and influence how our everyday clothing is worn and styled in the twenty-second century.
A correctly fitted bralette with cup shapes is popular for bigger bust sizes as they still support the back and shoulders. Visit one of our DeBra's stores for a complimentary fitting consultation and selection support.
Bras Vs Bralettes
Both are to cover and hold your breasts while you go about your day, but how they do this makes them different. Let us take a closer look at some of the differences.
Underwire - An underwire is a popular addition to high-support bras for our bigger-bust ladies. The firm construction of an underwire bra helps hold breasts up regardless of size and shape, and Bralettes are generally non-wired. Bralettes offer support from the band and straps, which comes from the quality of the elastic.
Padding - Bralettes provide a thin layer of coverage and are often made from a breathable material, making a perfect replacement for the padding in traditional bras.
When To Opt For A Bralette Over A Bra
Both bras and bralettes are suitable for different days depending on body shape and have distinct desires depending on where you are going and what you are doing. Oh, and let's not forget the style you want to achieve.
Bra
Alter the appearance of your breasts. Many bras on the market can shape and lift your breasts; on the other spectrum, minimiser bras can reduce the appearance of your breasts.
A padded and underwired bra will provide extra support; women with a larger bust often prefer the added support provided by a traditional bra.
If you like to wear thin clothing or want a smooth silhouette for a sense of modesty, you may like to opt for a regular bra.
Bralette
If you prefer to embrace what you got, little or a lot, and show off your breasts with self-acceptance and love, you shouldn't ignore a well-fitted bralette.
If comfort is on your priority list, you can't beat a good bralette's soft, gentle support.
A bralette is made to be seen and popular amongst women who want to take centre stage with one of our all-stretch lace bralettes.
So, Bra Vs Bralette – Who Wins?
We hate to sound cliché, but both have their merits! With traditional bras becoming more fashion forward and bralettes filling the gap between braless and heavy scaffolding, you should have both sitting in your lingerie drawer. For more information on storing and taking care of your bra, check out our article on bra care.
We like to compare bras to shoes. High Heels aren't the best choice when your feet hurt, and it's raining, just like underwired bras may not be the best choice under a halter neck. It's all about dressing for your body and your comfort. Bralettes can be the perfect addition to any wardrobe, along with your favourite underwires.
We're entering a new era of casual and complete body positivity, where women embrace their body shapes without the restriction of traditional scaffolding and wires.

Can A Bra Ease Back Pain
Regarding your bra, there’s no such thing as a one size fits all. Whether a woman chooses a particular bra to help support her breasts during pregnancy, to stay comfy and secure at the gym, or to help ease back pain, there’s a bra to suit every body shape and size.
Are You Experiencing Back Pain?
A good bra does more than protect your boobs. When fitted correctly, it also helps keep your back pain-free. Because we’re all different, the right bra will differ from woman to woman. If you’re honest with yourself, do you know if you’ve got the right bra for your boobs, back and body? Your bra might be too big or too small if you have bad posture, back pain, or even pinched nerves.
A professionally fitted bra can make all the difference if you live an active life and like to keep moving. An inadequate bra can set up a terrible cycle, ‘Women limit themselves from exercising because of their breasts. They deprive themselves, and the less they exercise, the more obese and buxom they may become,’ says sports physiotherapist Deirdre McGhee.
What To Look For
Try this stat on for size: a pair of D-cup breasts weighs between 6-10 kg; that’s a lot of weight to carry around. It stands to reason that the bigger your breasts, the more they move and the more uncomfortable you’re likely to be.
The answer is almost always as easy as a great bra. A bra designed with your boobs in mind is purpose-made to support the weight of your breasts. When your bra does its job, it can prevent strain in your back, neck and shoulders and even stave off terrible tension headaches.

Maternity Bra Guide
During your pregnancy, everything changes, from a newfound nesting obsession to using your belly as a table. And don’t forget your breasts, when you think they’ve changed shape for the last time, they change again. Gone are the days of the ugly, styleless maternity bras. Today there are so many styles, forms, and designs to choose from that it can become a little overwhelming and confusing.
We have spoken to DeBra’s Senior Fitting Consultants, who have shared tips for buying maternity bras to help you along the way.
Debra's Maternity Bra Guide
What Is A Maternity Bra?
A maternity bra is specially crafted to provide extra support and comfort for expecting and nursing mothers. With adjustable straps, soft fabrics, and flexible designs, it accommodates your changing body, ensuring you feel confident and cared for throughout your motherhood journey. At DeBra's, we believe in celebrating every stage of life with the perfect fit.
When To Buy A Maternity Bra?
Timing is everything. There is no hard science as to when is the right time for a maternity bra, as every woman is different and develops differently during pregnancy. We’re all different, so when it comes to the best time to find your maternity bra, it’s a ‘you kind of thing’. There are some facts to bear in mind in terms of timing. Your breasts get busy gearing up for lactation early in pregnancy. Most changes in the breast usually happen within the first ten weeks; however, you should listen to your body. You’ll feel and know when you’re growing out of your regular bra.
Within four months of gestation, your breasts will have adapted and done most of their changing. If you haven’t already needed to, this is a great time to get professionally fitted. The key to a great maternity bra is buying one that works now; if it’s too big or too small, it’s useless. It would help if you had the proper comfort and support now, not later.
The breasts start to prepare for lactation quite early in most pregnancies. Around 16 weeks gestation is when most changes to the breast have occurred and is a recommended time to get fitted.
Your Body Knows The Best
Maternity bras might not be for you, and we are not here to change your mind. As your body changes through your pregnancy, you may feel your breasts becoming heavier. If you find wearing a bra, in general, to be annoying and limiting, you may not be filled with joy at the thought of buying a maternity bra. But until you find the right bra, they’ll always feel wrong. During pregnancy, wearing a bra can save your breast tissues from stretching and the resulting sag. On the flip side, if you get a poor fit, you may experience strain in your shoulders, neck and back, resulting in damaged breast tissue.
How To Choose A Maternity Bra?
The fewer seams, the better when it comes to maternity bras. To steer clear of chafing around your nipples, choose a bra without seams of stitches across them. Maternity bras have cup linings made from cotton or natural fibres, which is good for ouchy, sensitive boobs. If you want to sleep in your maternity bra, they can be a bed-friendly option if your breasts hurt while you’re lying down due to hormonal shifts and fluid build-up. If you’re reluctant to try a maternity bra or a maternity singlet, try the Toffee Nursing Tank, which has all the support without the seams.
Find Fiddly-free
Not all maternity bras are Bridget Jones-y; all structure and no style. There are plenty of choices now, and they’re beautiful too. It’s important to feel like you, so pick the look to boost your breasts and sense of self. Go for something with easy closures because who’s got time for all the fiddling? Make sure they function like a finely oiled machine; practise opening and closing the tabs and bra flaps. You’ll be doing this a lot, so it needs to work for you.
A Growing Solution
Maternity bra sizing is the same as for regular bras. But your boobs won’t be, so a fab fit is a key to comfort. Fingers crossed, if you get your maternity bra fitted at the right time in your pregnancy, you may only need to shop once. But more often than not, your breasts will tell you if your bra is getting too small, so get ready to go bra-shopping more than once. If you buy in trimester one or two, the tail end of your pregnancy may see you back for another bra. Maternity bras are unique, they have up to seven rows of hooks at the back, so they can extend as your baby grows and pushes everything up. Then after bub is born, you can tighten it up again.

Top Mistakes As Seen By Bra Fitters
1. Understanding Your Size
One of women's biggest mistakes in bras is wearing the wrong size. Whether it's a band that's too tight, cups that are too small, or straps that dig into your shoulders, an ill-fitting bra can wreak havoc on your comfort and confidence. That's why it's essential to get professionally measured to ensure you wear the correct size for your body size and shape. A fitting with a professional fitters can help you determine your band size, cup size, and other factors that affect fit, ensuring you find a bra that feels like it was made just for you.
3. Embracing Your Unique Shape
In addition to size, it's essential to consider your unique breast shape when shopping for bras. Every woman's body is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Whether you have full breasts, shallow breasts, or something in between, there's a bra out there that's perfect for you. Our complimentary fitting service can help you understand your breast shape and recommend bras that provide the support and comfort you need.
4. Investing in Quality
Another common mistake women make when it comes to bras is skimping on quality. While it may be tempting to opt for budget-friendly options, cheaply made bras often lack the support and durability needed for everyday wear. Investing in high-quality bras made from premium materials is essential for comfort and longevity. A fitting with a DeBra's professional fitting consultants can help you find bras that are well-made and suited to your unique needs and preferences. We recommend prioritising quality over quantity and investing in bras crafted from premium material designed to last.
5. Proper Care and Maintenance
Even the best-fitting bra won't last long if it's not properly cared for. We cannot stress the importance of following care instructions, including hand washing delicate bras and avoiding machine drying. By caring for your bras properly, you can extend their lifespan and ensure they continue to provide the support you need. For more information on how to properly care for your bra, see our Bra Care Guide.
Below are common questions we regularly encounter in the fitting rooms at DeBra's.
Why does my bra band ride up my back?
If the band is loose on your body or it rides up your back, you are wearing the incorrect size. A properly fitting band should sit snuggly around your back.
What are some signs that indicate I am wearing the wrong cup size?
Indications of a wrong cup size include spillage over the cups, wrinkling or gaping in the fabric, or the underwire digging into your breast tissue.
Can wearing the wrong size bra affect my posture?
Yes, wearing an ill-fitting bra can contribute to poor posture. For example, a bra with inadequate support may cause you to slouch or compensate unnaturally to alleviate discomfort.
How often should I get fitted for a new bra?
Getting fitted for a new bra at least once a year is recommended, as weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, and aging can all impact your bra size and shape.
