Size is just the starting point. A bra that matches your measurements can still feel uncomfortable if the shape isn't quite right for your breast type, the style doesn't suit your body, the materials aren't quite right for your needs, or the bra is simply past its best. If you're finding yourself consistently uncomfortable in bras - even ones that seem like they should fit - it's usually a sign that one of these factors needs adjusting, and that's exactly what a good fit can help uncover.

1. You're Wearing the Wrong Shape for Your Body

Bra sizing tells you the starting point of your fit, but shape is what really determines how a bra feels on your body. The same cup size can fit very differently in a balconette, plunge, or full cup style because each one is designed to support and position the breast tissue in a slightly different way.

For example, a plunge bra pulls breast tissue towards the centre. If your breasts naturally sit wide apart, this creates pulling and discomfort even in the correct size. A balconette, which has wide-set straps and lifts from below, is a better match for widely spaced breasts. Similarly, a full cup bra suits forward-projecting busts, while women with less upper fullness often find the top of the cup gaps no matter what size they try.

Getting the shape right often makes more difference than the size. Read our guide to breast shapes and which bras suit them - or book a fitting where our fitters can assess both at once.

2. Your Bra Is Ready For a Refresh

Bras have a lifespan. Over time, the elastic in the band and straps naturally starts to lose its stretch, the underwire can shift within its casing, and the cups may begin to lose their original shape. A bra that's been through 50+ washes can feel quite different to when you first bought it, even if it still looks like it should be doing the job.

As a general rule, an everyday bra should be replaced every 6-12 months depending on how often it is worn and how it is cared for. Washing on a hot cycle, machine drying, or washing without a lingerie bag all accelerate the deterioration. For a full guide to how long your bras should last, read how often should I replace my bra.

3. You're Buying from Brands That Don't Specialise in Sizing

Often this comes down to awareness rather than anything else - many people simply haven't been shown that better fitting options exist, and it can take time to realise it's not you, it's the bra.

Fast fashion brands and department store lingerie ranges typically work within a limited size curve and use standardised construction across those sizes. Because of this, the bras aren't always engineered for the full variation in breast shape, tissue distribution, and support needs that exist across real bodies. Even women who fall within these size ranges can still find the fit uncomfortable or inconsistent.

Specialist lingerie brands take a different approach. Bras are designed from the inside out, with more considered cup engineering, varied wire shapes, and built-in support features like side panels and structured band designs. This is because a 14E and a 14F aren't just "more or less fabric" - they're often different shaping and support needs altogether. This is also why the same size can feel completely different from one brand to another.

4. The Bra Lacks Comfort-Focused Features

Beyond size and shape, specific design features make a significant difference to how a bra feels across a long day. These are things worth looking for:

  • J-hooks and centralised straps: A J-hook converts the back straps to a racerback position, pulling them inward and distributing weight more evenly across the back. This reduces shoulder dig and is particularly useful for women whose straps slip off wider shoulders. The Panache Sport Power Moulded Sports Bra uses this feature, with a high-positioned J-hook that can also help extend band life as the elastic softens.
  • Cushioned straps and padded hooks: Straps that cut into the shoulder are often a sign of a bra doing too much work from above and not enough from the band below. Cushioned or wider straps distribute the pressure more evenly. Padded hook-and-eye closures prevent digging at the back fastening - a small detail that makes a real difference during long wear.
  • Silicone-encased wires: The underwire in cheaper bras sits directly in a fabric casing that can wear thin and allow the wire to poke or migrate. Silicone-encased wires stay in position, resist distortion after washing, and sit more smoothly against the body.
  • Quality fabric: Low-quality synthetic fabrics pill, lose their stretch quickly, and can irritate skin over time. Modal, TENCEL, microfibre, and powermesh all wear better, breathe better, and maintain their structure across more washes.

5. The Band Length Doesn't Suit Your Torso

Sometimes discomfort isn't about cup size or wire shape - it's simply where the bra band lands on your frame. For women with shorter torsos, a standard band can feel like it sits too low and presses into the upper hip area, which can cause irritation even when the size is technically correct.

In these cases, styles with a reduced or reworked band can make a big difference. For example, bandless designs like the Elomi Charley Bandless Spacer Moulded Bra remove excess fabric under the cup, allowing the bra to sit more comfortably on a shorter torso without digging in.

This is one of those subtle fit adjustments that can completely change how a bra feels - and it's exactly the kind of detail our fitters look at when fine-tuning your fit.
