Whether you wear your breast form every day or for specific occasions, it is an important investment in your comfort, confidence, and wellbeing. With a little regular care, your Amoena prosthesis can continue to provide a natural look and feel for years to come. The best news is that caring for your breast form is quick and easy, and once it's part of your daily routine, it requires very little time or effort.

Daily Cleaning

The simplest approach is to wash your breast form when you wash your face at night - it takes less than a minute. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, oil-free cleanser. Amoena's Soft Clean Breast Form Cleanser is specifically formulated for silicone breast forms and is the product our team recommends. It cleans without leaving any residue that could affect the skin or, for adhesive forms, the adhesive surface.

Gently wash the surface with your hands or a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then pat dry with a soft towel. Never rub vigorously - gentle is always the approach with silicone.

If you wear your form daily, clean it daily. If you wear it occasionally, clean it before and after each use.

What to Avoid

A few habits can shorten the life of your breast form significantly. Keep these in mind:

  • No heat sources - avoid hair dryers, direct sunlight, and tumble dryers. Heat degrades silicone over time.
  • No harsh chemicals, alcohol-based products, or abrasive sponges. These damage the silicone surface.
  • No oils, perfumes, or body lotion on your chest before wearing your form - these can affect adhesion and the silicone surface.
  • No sharp objects near the form - remove jewellery before handling, and keep brooches, fingernails, and pins away. Piercing the silicone can cause it to leak and lose its shape.

Special Care for Adhesive (Contact) Forms

If you wear an Amoena Contact adhesive breast form, the adhesive surface needs specific attention to maintain its sticking strength. Apply three drops of Amoena Soft Clean directly onto the dry adhesive surface, moisten a soft brush with lukewarm water, or use your hands to scrub in circular movements for about three minutes. Rinse thoroughly, then place the form adhesive-side up on a towel to air dry before replacing the protective sheet.

Daily cleaning of the adhesive surface actually reactivates its strength - so regular care means better adhesion, not less.

Storing Your Breast Form

Always store your breast form in the shaped mould inside the box it came in. This keeps it in the correct position and protects it from dust and deformation. If you travel frequently, Amoena also offer specially designed carrying cases that help keep your breast form safe and properly supported while you're on the go. Although we don't routinely stock these cases, we can often arrange a special order. Simply speak with one of our mastectomy fitting specialists or contact our team and we'll be happy to help explore the available options with you.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Even indirect sun exposure over time can degrade the silicone, so a drawer or cupboard is always preferable to a windowsill or bathroom shelf.

After Swimming

We do not recommend swimming in a standard silicone breast form. Chlorine, salt water, sunscreen, and other pool or beach chemicals can damage the silicone over time and may shorten the lifespan of your breast form.

For women who enjoy swimming regularly, we recommend choosing a dedicated swim form such as the Amoena Aqua Wave Swim Form. Lightweight, chlorine resistant, and specifically designed for use in the water, it offers a more suitable and durable solution for swimming and water-based activities. To keep it in excellent condition, wash it after each swim using cool or warm water and a mild soap, rinse thoroughly, gently pat dry with a soft towel, and store it flat in a cool, dry place once completely dry.

If you do choose to wear a standard breast form in the water, it is important to rinse it thoroughly as soon as possible after swimming using cool or lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser to remove chlorine, salt, and sunscreen residue. Pat dry with a soft towel and allow it to air dry completely before storing. For foam forms, gently squeeze out excess water rather than wringing.

How Long Should a Breast Form Last?

With the right care, a quality silicone breast form can provide comfort and confidence for two years or more. When the time comes for a replacement, Medicare and some private health funds may help cover the cost of a new prosthesis. Our team will be happy to discuss your options and answer any questions during your fitting appointment.

If your breast form has changed shape, developed an unusual odour, or the adhesive surface is no longer holding, it may be time to look at a replacement. Book a mastectomy fitting appointment, and our consultants will assess your current form and guide you through your options.
